Foinaven Abstract Series
Examples of sensitivity to place abound in both literature and visual art. Many artists of the St Ives School for example display in their work a sensitivity to the Cornish landscape as place. Peter Lanyon was one such artist. He was acutely aware of Cornwall’s history and geography and many of his paintings and constructions capture place through the projection of the physical experience of specific elements of the Cornish landscape on to the picture plane. However, Lanyon and other St Ives artists illustrate in their work the fact that deep meaning can be conveyed by images that though derived from the sense of a place are not faithful representations of a place.
The Foinaven/Arkle range is a special place, very distinct in its topography, structural geology and ecology. It occupies a unique place in the natural history of the British Isles as a result. The works in this gallery are an attempt to capture many of these aspects of these mountains. Although often apparently abstract or at least non-figurative the works here all relate in some way to the character of this particular mountain place.
