The cartographer has several ways of representing relief on a two dimensional map. Here the artist has married two of these approaches to produce form lines simulating the essence of a three dimensional terrain model of part of the Foinne Bheinn/Arcuil (Foinaven/Arkle) range. Although the colours used rendered here in oil reflect the pinks and whites of the basal quartzite and pipe rock of the Cambrian Quartzite Group that forms the sloping plateau of the Plat Reidh the overall composition owes at least as much to abstract expressionism and colour field painting in particular.
