These two apparently abstract paintings (Nos.36 & 37) derive from the pattern of rock outcrops shown on geological maps that are in a very real sense works of art in their own right. Though simplified and schematic they depict in the heavily textured part of the canvas a representation of the altered, metamorphosed rocks of the Moine Schists.
These are separated from the remainder of the composition by a line or zone representing the outcrop at the surface of a inclined thrust plane or zone.
Beyond this the unaltered An t-Sron Group of strata of Cambrian age (Fucoid Beds and Saltarella Grit) are repeated many times over by reverse faults imbricate faults leading to the observed rhythmic pattern of outcrops at the surface.
