One Man's Mountain
Capturing a sense of place: paintings from the far north west
This exhibition seeks to capture the essence of a particular place known intimately by the artist and resonate with meaning for him. It is true that landscape artists have had some success in the representation of place. This is so whether conveying directly the actual character of a place, or perhaps even more so when capturing indirectly the spirit of a place.
Nonetheless, it should be remembered that the ability of an artist to convey the depth of meaning inherent in a place is limited by his/her own embedded knowledge and by the knowledge, sensitivity and attentiveness to places possessed by the viewer. Here the artist does possess that embedded knowledge and has a deep understanding of this particular place and is able to draw on this awareness and use it to inform the works in this exhibition.
Although entitled "One Man's Mountain" the works cover a collection of individual hills that nonetheless constitute a single mountain massif (Foinaven and Arkle).
