Landscapes possess a depth of meaning which goes beyond their physical and sensory properties: the spirit of landscape. They become a body of symbolic forms capable of being invoked and reshaped to express meaning and values.
This exhibition reflects this notion of landscape through the work of sixteen talented and experienced artists. The concept of theme and variation is exemplified by the distinctive and highly individual response that the landscape elicits in each, and in the way that response is interpreted in their equally individual practice. The selection and curation of the work is deliberately designed to highlight this variation about the common theme.
Nonetheless, these artists are united both by their intellectual and emotional attachment and sensibility to landscape and by a shared exploration of contemporary landscape painting practice under the guidance and mentorship of Christopher Baker. They have all sought to develop their practice and refine their engagement with landscape through the 'School of Landscape Painting' that Christopher set up in 2010
