'code' is an exhibition including a site specific installation by Tracey-Jane Cuckow and paintings by Iain White, exploring the relationships between art, science and musical notation.
At the heart of both art and science is the desire to conceive something new and to express it to others, although the boundary between the two may appear to be fixed. Science has an objective and logical focus opposed to the subjective and aesthetic aspects of art, and yet science and art share much in common, both functioning as human efforts to imitate, recreate or understand the natural world.
Two artists (one with a scientific background) come together to move between concept and experience thus breaking down the border and forming a relationship.
Musical notation is a visible legacy of an ephemeral experience that enables repeat performance, and this site-specific installation inspired by the migration of the Monarch butterfly, takes found musical notations and changes their shape, just as music creates visual images in the mind.
The paintings are abstracted from the models of meta-population dynamics which explore spatially distinct habitat patches where local populations risk extinction. The smaller the population the more prone to extinction and this fascinating collaboration makes reference to the colonisation-extinction of non-migrating butterflies.
