In each of these works a uniform area is added to an existing habitat ... an isolated woodland for example ... to increase species diversity and enhance conservation objectives.
Here a strategy of extending the boundary by the given area increases the area of edge habitat, but does nothing towards increasing the area of interior, at least initially. However, given a long enough period of time the original edge may develop some of the characteristics or the interior habitat.
