56. Through the Lairig Ghru to Deeside

oil on canvas,
40cm x 40cm,
Iain White, 2019
£285

Climbing towards the summit of the Lairig Ghru and the pools of Dee below Lurcher's Grag (Creag an Leth-choin).

This steep sided trough cutting through the Cairngorm massif is a glacial difluence trough gouged out by glaciers emerging from corries below Braeriach and Carn Toul. They then diverged flowing both south to Deeside and north towards the Spey.

The pines in the foreground would originally have grown further along the floor of the Lairig and up the slopes on either side before a combination of climate deterioration, timber extraction and grazing pressure suppressed the treeline.
