South along Arcuil (Arkle) Summit Ridge,

oil on canvas,
91cm x 61cm,
Iain White, 2016,
£345

On some of the summit ridges of the Foinne Bheinn / Arcuil massif the removal of loose weathered mountain top detritus under gravity as screes reveals the in situ weathered bedrock. Here blocks of quartzite are separated by deep joints forming an almost flat ‘pavement’.
However, in other places some of these quartzite core stones rise above the general level of the ridge as ‘tors’. Such a situation occurs on the Arcuil summit ridge and is seen in the foreground of this stylised and abstracted image. The remainder of the ridge , the plateau dipping to the south and other distant hills are shown receding in the background.
