One Man’s Mountain,

oil on canvas,
60cm x 60cm,
Iain White, 2015
£300

A self portrait sitting in the evening on the col between Arcuil (Arkle) and the ridge of Foinne Bheinn (Foinaven) stretching before me to the north west. In 1965 I had spent several days camped below this col on the shores of Loch an Easain Uaine whilst carrying out field work for my research into Scottish mountain vegetation. In those days, before major investment in infrastructure facilitated by the Highlands and Islands Development Board and later the EU Regional Fund, the far north west Highlands of Scotland were even more remote. The roads, even the main roads were single track often with grass growing down the middle. Tourism was in its infancy and life remained fairly traditional.
